L'Oeil des Houillères

A documentary directed by Marion Fontaine and Richard Berthollet, produced by Christian Dias (D-Vox), France 3 Hauts-de-France and supported by Pictanovo.

Synopsis : From 1949 to 1992, a private police system reigned in the heart of the Houillères mine of the french Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining region. SSB was their code name, which stands for Service de Surveillance du Bassin – Basin Surveillance Service. The eyes and ears of the Houillères were three hundred men who knew everything about everyone and under all circumstances. How could a state enterprise develop such a system in the midst of the post-war boom and up to a very recent period, without provoking either protest or revolt among the miners?
